2016 – OMSC Masters relay team breaks Canadian record

Four members of Okanagan Masters Swim Club (OMSC) excelled by breaking the Canadian short course record for the 200 metre mixed medley relay at the 2016 Masters Swimming Association of BC Provincial Championships held in Richmond this weekend.

Competing in the combined age group 320-359, four swimmers broke the Canadian record in a time of 3:43.41. The team consisted of Conny Stamhuis (84) backstroke, Ross Carviel (86) breaststroke, Tony Hoft (61) butterfly and Betty Brussel (92) freestyle. Brussel also broke the 100 metre BC breaststroke record for age group 90-94.

Several OMSC swimmers achieved one or more individual first places in their respective age groups. They were Betty Brussell (92), Ross Carviel (86), Conny Stamhuis (84), Val Newth (70), Brenda Balderson (62), John Zakala (54), Jeanette Hoft (52), Jodi Merckx (46), Christy Kirk (46), Carmelle Guidi-Swan (44), Pascal Sutherland (40) and Thomas Robinson (21). OMSC was represented by 12 female and 6 male competitors.

OMSC vice-president Carmelle Guidi-Swan said: ” In addition to these winning performances, our club celebrates the diversity of swimmers we have competing at Provincials. Although we have swimmers who competed as kids, the majority have only started to compete relatively recently as adults. These swimmers are the heart of masters swimming and have made great strides. It

is truly amazing to be in a sport where 21 year olds and 90 year olds can take part in events together and not only cheer each other on, but inspire each other as well. Thanks also to our OMSC coaches who in addition to solid training, encourage our swimmers to overcome their fears to compete. ”
