2020 Aug – OMSC Suspends Coached Sessions until further notice

Aug 20, 2020 update: the OMSC program has been suspended until further notice. Pending discussions between the City, YMCA and user groups, and containment of COVID-19 in the area, access by user groups may be available from mid to late Sept 2020.

In light of the everchanging situation with the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, and in the interest of the health and safety of our members, the OMSC Board has made the difficult decision to suspend coached swimming sessions with immediate effect, until and including April 30th.

We have heard concerns from both members and coaches and have chosen to err on the side of caution.

We appreciate that some members may choose to access the H2O facilities and continue swimming on their own, and have asked our coaches to provide written workouts for the next six weeks, to accommodate skills levels across their usual coached sessions. We will send you the website links once available for download.

The YMCA has advised that its H2O facilities will be open and that programs will continue to operate.  However, as of March 14 saunas and steam rooms will be closed and access to pools will be limited to comply with BC’s Provincial Health Officer direction.  Group class size will be limited to allow for recommended social distancing.  Updates on YMCA closures and cancellations can be found here.

For important guidelines on how to prevent the spread of the virus, including Social Distancing, visit the Government of Canada’s information website page on community based measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus disease.

We will continue to provide updates on a timely basis. The Board will review the situation towards the end of April and provide an update then.

On behalf of the OMSC Board
Tony Hoft,
Acting President
